Tenerife is the largest (2034km²) of the 7 Canary Islands, and also the most populated with around 900,000 inhabitants. Tenerife has a few different climates, on the south coast there is heavy wind from about midday which is great for surfers, on every other side of Tenerife (East, West, North) it’s a lot less windy which means it feels a lot hotter. Tenerife is home to the third largest volcano in the world, which is so high it has an ecosystem of its own, it’s not rare to see rain on the volcano while the sun is shining down at the beach.
Most of the beaches in Tenerife are man-made, but that doesn’t take away from the beauty of the golden sand and clear waters. Most of the main beaches are extremely busy throughout the year, but if you are looking for a quiet beach there are plenty of beautiful beaches and lagoons around the island which are practically deserted. You will need to hire a car to access them but if you are a fan of lounging on the beach for the whole day it is well worth it, especially since car hire is pretty cheap, you can get a standard car for around 25 Euros per day.
If golf is your thing, than Tenerife should be your island of choice. Boasting 8 impressive golf courses and a tourist resort built for golfing (Golf Del Sur) there’s more than enough holes here to keep even Tiger Woods happy.
If you are an animal lover, Tenerife should appeal to you too; with 4 big animal parks for you to visit – Loro Parque, Monkey World, Camel Park and Jungle World. As well as the parks you have Scuba Diving and boat trips that will take you out to see Whales and Dolphins in the wild.
Other great activities include guided tours, submarine tours, jeep safaris, day trips to Lanzarote and of course one of the best water parks in Europe Siam Park.
Car Rental is cheap in Tenerife if you’re not fussy about which type of car you drive and the motorists are much better than they are in other countries like Kos.
